“This series of 100 ( 2’ x 2’ ) wood panel paintings began in 2015 and was completed in 2020.
I intended to create a massive board game with 100 painted squares, each detailing an aspect of lived experience.
The Snakes and Ladders board game from childhood was the initial framework as the virtue/vice dynamic seemed to exist from the beginning.
As the series progressed it became apparent that they were a collection of ‘journey’ images that explored many themes; internal conflict, historical frameworks, an imagined future, trauma, and transformation.
The majority of paint was applied with knives and sticks, in addition to aerosol spray. A fine brush was used to add detail. The expressionist and abstract nature of the work demanded an immediacy and directness of paint application. The series is intended to be both visceral and intimate.
The series has not been mounted in a physical space due to the pandemic. The digital installation has been designed to create an audiovisual atmosphere in which the viewer may imagine themselves in a subterranean tunnel.
Viewing the installation on a desktop offers the most immersive experience, allowing visitors to explore the series with a spotlight. Through a tablet and mobile device, visitors can expand the images to examine important details.
